The seventy-fourth Oviedo Opera Season opens the lyrical cycle with one of the most popular and most represented titles in the history of opera: Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi. Nabucco was Verdi's first major hit. This opera, with a biblical background, in which Verdi put his music at the service of patriotic ideals, is a hymn to the freedom of an oppressed people: the Jews, deported to Babylon by the despotic Nebuchadnezzar. The choirs, a true proclamation in favor of freedom and against tyranny, enshrined the triumph of the opera. The Italian public that attended the premiere at La Scala, Milan was under Austrian domination, immediately understood the message and decreed the triumph of the opera.
