It was the opera Nabucco , whose phenomenal success (premiered in Milan's La Scala on March 9, 1842) launched the then twenty-eight-year-old Giuseppe Verdi's path to fame. Verdi introduced a completely new compositional style in it. The influences of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini are still heard here, but it is evident that the purely virtuosic passages of the bel canto period have given way to arias and ensembles in the service of dramatic tension and fall, dramatic realism and theatrical verisimilitude. The change in compositional style also required a change in singing style, not only vocally, but also dramatically; the singers therefore had to have extraordinary vocal versatility and acting talent. In  Nabuccowe find one of the most difficult soprano parts – Abigaille. But also perhaps the most famous choral opera scene ever, "Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" ("Fly, thought, on golden wings"). This iconic hymn to freedom became a symbol of Italian resistance against Austrian rule in Verdi's time, and it has repeated its role as a political appeal several times even today.

In the Czech lands,  Nabucco  was performed in German for the first time on March 5, 1849 in Prague's Estates Theater. The current production was directed by the famous Argentinian tenor  José Cura , with whom the Prague State Opera troupe had already collaborated in autumn 2001 during a tour of Japan with a production of Verdi's  Aida  (José Cura in the role of Radamo). In January 2015, José Cura guested on the stage of the State Opera in the title role of Verdi's  Otello .
