American music? After the New York premiere of Dvořák's symphony "From the New World" in 1893, it was believed to have been heard: a "lesson for American composers" (New York Times). Dvořák had been commissioned to go to the USA specifically to found a national school – which is why he composed his Ninth, which he composed there, using means that were felt to be typically American and dealt with the music of indigenous cultures. The latter was also done by Antonio Estévez, who achieved world fame in the 1950s and 1960s as a pioneer of a new, nationally influenced Venezuelan music. The best example of this is his "Cantata Criolla" about the Faustian myth of a pact between the devil and a singer.
