Ying Fang and the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo under the direction of Fabio Luisi interpret Gustav Mahler's 4th Symphony, which is based on the song "Das himmlische Leben" - a naive, albeit in Mahler's case also broken, vision of paradise as a land of milk and honey. No less a person than Konzerthaus honorary member Rudolf Buchbinder takes on the solo part in Edvard Grieg's only piano concerto. The composition was to help the 25-year-old Grieg to make his breakthrough. Even Franz Liszt was once extremely enthusiastic about the work: Grieg met his contemporary in 1870 during a study trip to Rome. In the presence of several guests, Liszt played the piano concerto directly from the sheet music. Grieg reported this experience to his parents in a letter: Liszt "left the piano and walked with mighty theatrical steps through the great monastery hall with his arm raised and sang the theme almost shouting. At the fortissimo mentioned above, he stretched out his arm like an emperor and shouted: G, G, not G sharp! Famos!«
