Norma, who discovers the forbidden love between her partner Adalgisa and Pollione, will go through many emotional states: from being the furious woman who calls to arms to sacrificing her life. What is her paradise: the refuge of faith ?, Pollione's love ?, the well-being of her society?

This extraordinary production signed by Àlex Ollé for the Royal Opera House in London updates Normaplacing it in the context of an oppressive religion. Exploring the conflict between individual and community desires, Ollé points to religion as a unifying force and a way of ordering the world, but also as a repressive element against the individual who wants to break away from the law. . Norma, in the midst of a debate between her will or the freedom of her people, is completely caught up in collective references (social rules and the weight of ancient symbols and faith). His doubts and fragility appear as contemporary resonances in the face of a religion understood as bigotry, inflexible law and blind instrument. The rules drown Norma, submissive daughter, betrayed lover, and desperate mother.

Without escaping and becoming a real heroine, she accepts her guilt and is ready to die. A purifying sacrifice and a story that offers one of the most difficult and emblematic roles in the history of opera. This major work of Belcantism and the third opera that was performed in the inaugural season of the Liceu in 1847 is the perfect example of musical tragedy.
