ELIZABETH ET VINCENT MEYER SUPPORT THE SERIES OF OPERAS IN CONCERT VERSION

As Michelangelo granted utmost importance to the human body, so Bellini granted utmost importance to the voice in this opera: this 'naked' melodrama.

Casta diva: the title role, with its famous prayer, has done more than any other to foster the diva myth, from vengeful vehemence to divine cantilena. Norma, high priestess of the Gauls, has had two children by her secret lover, a Roman officer; when she discovers his betrayal, she turns into a fury as threatening as Medea and sacrifices herself on the expiatory pyre. The most famous bel canto aria, which is performed for the first time at the Festival, is a masterpiece of perfection in the history of opera – its floating melodic lines and relentless scansions are fiery and tragic beyond compare. Riccardo Minasi uses his own critical edition to conduct the Resonanz Ensemble, known for its historically informed interpretations; Michael Spyres and Amina Edris stand alongside Karine Deshayes, at the height of her art, who is simultaneously taking on the role and making her Festival debut.

Casta diva : le rôle-titre, avec sa célèbre prière, a fait plus qu’aucun autre pour nourrir le mythe de la cantatrice, entre véhémence vengeresse et cantilène ineffable. Norma, grande prêtresse des Gaulois, a comme amant secret un officier romain qui lui a donné deux enfants ; quand elle découvre qu’il la délaisse pour une autre, elle se fait aussi menaçante que Médée, avant de se sacrifier sur un bûcher expiatoire. Le titre-phare du bel canto – l’un des plus parfaits chefs-d’œuvre de l’histoire de l’opéra : d’un feu et d’une épure tragiques incomparables, avec ses lignes mélodiques flottantes et ses scansions rythmiques implacables – est donné pour la première fois au Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Riccardo Minasi dirige sa propre édition critique à la tête de l’Ensemble Resonanz, spécialisé dans les interprétations historiquement informées ; Michael Spyres et Amina Edris entourent une Karine Deshayes parvenue au faîte de son art, qui effectue en même temps sa prise de rôle et ses débuts au Festival.
