Proof that lightning can strike twice in the same place: Leonard Slatkin returns with signature music from three American greats and a combustible Russian masterpiece with the ‘immensely talented’ (Washington Post) Olga Kern as soloist. Hailed for her playing of Rachmaninov – ‘plenty of meaning, energy and articulation’ (Boston Herald) – few pianists realise the teeming romance, playful poetry and blistering virtuosity of his Third Piano Concerto with such insight as Olga Kern. Composed after a long period focused on opera, it is a bravura operatic duet without words – a daring high-wire act for the soloist translating combustible bravado into bravura brilliance. The orchestra is no less virtuosic and agile, both deliriously pirouetting together in a blazing, blistering finale. ‘One of the most successful women composers of all time’ (New Yorker), Joan Tower’s vivid and vital Made in America treats America’s unofficial national anthem, America the Beautiful as part-portrait, part-celebration, part-test of character. A stirring orchestral fantasy, it employs the orchestra’s rich colour palette and muscle with becoming hues and winning heft. Written in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Cindy McTee’s Adagio for String Orchestra borrows from Penderecki’s Polish Requiem to create a work of dark, lamenting uncertainty and tremulous beauty. The Symphonic Suite drawn from Leonard Bernstein’s score for Elia Kazan’s Oscar-laden 1954 film On the Waterfront is a heavyweight exercise in dramatic, evocative, atmospheric music, its muscle and menace transformed into a final, redemptive hymn to individual freedom.
