Der Kunstsammler Whitelaw Savory lässt sich aus dem Orient eine antike Venusstatue beschaffen und in sein Museum bringen. Aus einer naiven Laune heraus steckt der Friseur Rodney Hatch an den Finger der Statue jenen Ring, der für seine Verlobte gedacht ist. Nach 3000 Jahren findet sich Venus im New York der 1940er Jahre wieder und verliebt sich in den Friseur, der sie zum Leben erweckt hat. Rodney versucht zwar, vor der Göttin der Liebe davon zu laufen, doch er entkommt ihr nicht. Nun hält man ihn für den Dieb der Statue und – als die erzürnte Venus mit einem Handstreich Rodneys Verlobte auf den Nordpol verfrachtet – gar für einen Mörder. Rodney, der Friseur, und Venus, die Göttin, landen im Gefängnis. Als der Göttin bewusst wird, dass eine Beziehung zu Rodney ein Leben in der Biederkeit der Vorstadt zur Folge hätte, zieht sie es vor, wieder zur Statue zu erstarren. Songs wie „Speak Low“, „I’m a Stranger Here Myself“ oder „Westwind“ machen das Stück derart populär, dass es mit 567 Vorstellungen Kurt Weills größter Erfolg am Broadway wird. Dionne Wudu, die in Graz in „Ragtime“ gefeiert wurde, ist in der Titelpartie zu erleben. Und statt ihr Haar zu frisieren, steckt ihr Christoph Messner (als Rodney Hatch) lieber einen Ring an den Finger. Erstmals an der Oper Graz inszeniert die österreichische Regisseurin Magdalena Fuchsberger, deren Inszenierungskatalog Oper und Musical gleichermaßen umfasst.

The art collector Whitelaw Savory has an ancient statue of Venus procured from the Orient and brought to his museum. In a naïve whim, barber Rodney Hatch slips the ring intended for his fiancee onto the statue's finger.
