The performance, which premiered at the Mikhailovsky Theater in May this year and was recognized as the highlight of the musical season in the Northern Capital, will be shown for the only time in Moscow on the stage of the Musical Theater. K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko.
Oprichnik is the first operatic work by Tchaikovsky that saw the stage and was an unconditional success. However, his further stage fate was not easy, and the opera was among the "rarely performed". The creators of the performance - stage director Sergei Novikov and conductor Alexander Solovyov - returned Oprichnik to the general public. This opera reveals the true genius of Tchaikovsky, a symphonist and opera composer.
Work on the score of the Oprichnik opera was completed by Tchaikovsky in the spring of 1872, but the world premiere took place in St. Petersburg only two years later, on April 12, 1874. The performance directed by Eduard Napravnik was well received not only by the press, but also by the audience. The opera was shown for three seasons, but this success did not affect the opinion of the composer, who was dissatisfied with Oprichnik and forbade printing the score until a new edition was made. Tchaikovsky was actively engaged in "renovating" the opera in the last year of his life, sometimes deleting entire pages from the first version of the score, but did not have time to complete his plan. Based on these edits and notes, the creators of the performance at the Mikhailovsky Theater shortened the score, removing redundant repetitions, and dramatized individual fragments of the performance.
