Grande virtuose du piano saluée dans le monde entier, Hélène Grimaud est aussi reconnue pour son engagement envers la protection de la nature – né de son amour pour les loups – et la défense des droits de l’homme, en plus de sa carrière d’écrivaine. Avec l’Orchestre de Chambre de Bâle, dirigé du violon par son concertmaster Antonio Vinuales, elle interprète le Concerto n° 4 de Beethoven, un classique du répertoire pour piano qui se distingue par son originalité et sa profondeur d’expression.

L’Orchestre de Bâle met à l’honneur deux autres femmes remarquables, les deux compositrices Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn et Emilie Mayer, aux trajectoires différentes. La première montre dès son plus jeune âge des dons exceptionnels pour le piano et la composition, mais cette prometteuse carrière de musicienne est bien vite arrêtée par son frère Felix et leur père. C’est vers la fin de sa vie qu’elle brave les interdits familiaux et fait publier ses œuvres, avec l’aide de son mari.

Emilie Mayer a quant à elle réussi à être reconnue pour sa musique de son vivant mais point de mystère, deux facteurs essentiels étaient réunis : elle était indépendante financièrement et ne s’est jamais mariée. Surnommée la « Beethoven au féminin » à son époque, elle est l’auteure d’un important catalogue d’œuvres dont cette cinquième symphonie qui témoigne de son talent.

A great piano virtuoso acclaimed worldwide,  Hélène Grimaud is also recognized for her commitment  to nature protection – born from her love of wolves  – and the defense of human rights, in addition to her  career as a writer. With the Basel Chamber Orchestra,  conducted on the violin by its concertmaster Antonio Vinuales, she  performs Beethoven's Concerto No. 4, a classic of the  piano repertoire that stands out for its originality and  depth of expression.

The Basel Orchestra is honouring two other  remarkable women, the two composers Fanny Hensel- Mendelssohn and Emilie Mayer, who have had different careers.  The former showed exceptional gifts  for the piano and composition from a very young age, but this  promising career as a musician was soon put to an end by  her brother Felix and their father. It was towards the end of her life that she  defied family prohibitions and had her works published, with  the help of her husband.

Emilie Mayer managed to be recognized for  her music during her lifetime, but there is no mystery, two  essential factors were combined: she was  financially independent and never married. Nicknamed the  "female Beethoven" in her time, she is the author  of an important catalog of works including this fifth  symphony which testifies to her talent.
