Who but Orpheus, the ancient mythical singer, could be the opera's first hero? The artist, the musician, who overcomes death with his tones, is the incarnate symbol of this art form. For just a moment he frees the beloved from the underworld before she disappears again into the shadows. In terms of content, the opera from 1607 already contains everything that has been on the minds of music theater since then: death, excess emotions or (measure) measure, the power of love and the power of music. But where is Eurydice actually? Is she just the shadow in Orpheus' story? What are her wishes and does she even want to get back from the underworld?

Claudio Monteverdi wrote his ORFEO in the spirit of the Florentina Camerata, an association of musicians who were concerned with a musical revival of ancient tragedy. Tracking this down, the composer Michael Wilhelmi and the director Claudia Meyer translate Monteverdi's music into today. Musical arrangements, film sequences and texts from contemporary literature breathe new life into the “dramma per musica”, this musical drama from the 17th century. The focus is on a timeless question: How to continue to live after the loss of a loved one?
