On December 8, 2019, Olga Neuwirth's opera Orlando - based on Virginia Woolf's novel of the same name - will have its world premiere at the Haus am Ring. The work was commissioned in 2014 by State Opera Director Dominique Meyer for the Vienna State Opera. The libretto was written by the Franco-American author and playwright Catherine Filloux and the composer Olga Neuwirth herself.

Orlando is Virginia Woolf's first major literary success, which has become one of the most prominent classics of English modernism. It addresses the intertwining of gender identity, love and artistic creativity and poetically breaks social and personal reality in a sophisticated way.

The journey through time and generations through the centuries does not end in Olga Neuwirth's "Opera in 19 Scenes" as in the original in 1928, but continues into 2019. Olga Neuwirth's music theater opens a door into the realm of the simultaneity of things experienced, selected, heard, knowledge and feeling. So into the realm of fiction, built from memories. “Ever since I was a child I was interested in everything: art, politics, science, architecture, human psychology. I am equally inspired by the wonderful variety of life, the small and big things in the world. ORLANDO reflects this: Because the essence of this fictional biography is the love of the strange, the paradoxical, the grotesque, the artistry, exaggeration and exaggeration, to create a new morphology of a narrative in constant motion. It's also always about a cultivated, highly sophisticated form of sexual attraction and against the constriction in the direction of a single gender.
