Orlando
Along with Alcina and Ariodante , Orlando is the first of three Handel operas based on Ludovico Ariosto's epic Orlando furioso . Two rivals stand in the way of the happily in love couple Angelica and Medoro: Dorinda, who is also in love with Medoro, and the actual main protagonist Orlando, who is torn between war glory and his love for Angelica. Zoroastro, the linchpin of the opera, is the only one who stands above all the love turmoil and unobtrusively directs the fate of those involved.
In Jens-Daniel Herzog's production, the action takes place in a sanatorium for mentally ill patients, where Orlando, who has been driven insane by love, is supposed to regain his senses.
In the revival, Bejun Mehta, one of the world's most sought after countertenors, takes on the title role. Our ensemble member Julie Fuchs sings Angelica. As at the premiere, the great baroque specialist William Christie will conduct the original sound ensemble La Scintilla.
