What a great effect little hearts and vows of love carved in tree bark can have! When Knight Orlando sees from the carvings that his adored Angelica loves someone else, he succumbs to mad jealousy. Vengefully he pursues the lovers, who in turn are pursued by the choleric warrior Rodomonte. A wild chase begins. Because while Angelica's lover Medoro doesn't like a fight at all, it would be the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream for Rodomonte to finally duel with the frenzied Orlando. It's good that Angelica can count on the magical support of the fairy Alcina. But with such deep-seated love madness, even Alcina has to enlist the help of the underworld to bring Orlando back to his senses. Ultimately, however, nothing stands in the way of the general realization that if you want to be happy, it is best to only love those who love you. Better safe than sorry!

Based on the fantastic knight epic Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto, Joseph Haydn's Orlando Paladino , which premiered in 1782, lovingly pokes fun at blind love and pathetic heroism. Noble and rabbit-footed knights, charming but well-fortified ladies, terrifying monsters and all sorts of magic - with fresh melody and a sense of parody, Haydn combines these heroic, comic and sensitive elements into an unconventional, romantic fantasy opera. A firework of absurdly funny ideas and musical wit!
