With The Maiden of Orléans , Orleanskaya deva , Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky not only set an opulent musical memorial to his childhood heroine , but also created a unique Grand Opéra with Russian characteristics. Inspired by Friedrich Schiller's drama of the same name, Tchaikovsky's rarely performed work depicts the legend of France's national saint Jeanne d'Arc in dramatic tableaus, choral and crowd scenes and through an effective score: She fearlessly leads the French army to victory, but then decides against her divine one Mission and for love - and must die for it in the end at the stake.
In the cloister courtyard, Tchaikovsky's most monumental opera will be shown for the first time in St.Gallen. Director Barbora Horáková, who received the Ring Award in Graz in 2017 and Newcomer of the Year at the International Opera Awards in 2018, is responsible for the production. With Dmitri Jurowski, a proven expert in this repertoire is making his debut at the St.Gallen Festival.
