Orpheus and Eurydice do not have to contend with adverse fate, but with boredom and weariness in what is probably the most irreverent version of the myth that has ever been presented. Jacques Offenbach's »opéra bouffon« from 1858 satirizes conditions in Paris during the Second Empire: disguise and façade are everything. It is important to keep up appearances under all circumstances, otherwise »public opinion« threatens character assassination. It is only this threat that finally persuades Orpheus to go into the underworld to look for his wife there. Eurydice herself has no intention of returning to marital ennui, instead throwing herself into the arms of the god of hell Pluto - and, when he too disappoints her, into the clutches of a seductive fly... The story of a desperate search for happiness and adventure, which always fails for the same reasons, is staged by Markus Bothe as a fast-paced, over-the-top game of hide-and-seek in which people love, lie, suffer and laugh to their heart's content. Of course, the famous can-can from hell shouldn't be missing either.
