Francis van Broekhuizen returns to Opera Zuid as Junon! And how does she like being back? Francis talks about the process of Orphée aux Enfers rehearsals. ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS Shameless, hilarious and a little cheeky! In the opera Orphée aux Enfers, master satirist Jacques Offenbach gives a comic twist to the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice hates the music of Orpheus, rejects her civil life and therefore travels to the underworld with her lover Pluto. The gods, bored with their rich and powerful lives, decide to follow Eurydice. Their appearance in the underworld leads to an extravagant and liberating celebration, during which the 'Galop infernal' dance (now better known as the cancan) erupts to a euphoric climax. Directed by Benjamin Prins, who directs another piece by Offenbach at Opera Zuid with Orphée aux Enfers (Fantasio, 2019), the piece remains a parody of antiquity. 'Not only because I've been a fan of Greek mythology from an early age, but mainly because Offenbach's music needs magic. I don't want to convert this opera into a realistic world, like a hotel lobby or a restaurant. The world we see on stage must be as vibrant as Offenbach's music. For that I need the magic of the gods. But I'll play ping pong with timelines. We take a trip to the 18th century to make fun of Gluck's 'Orphée', which is very serious. And why, after a nod to the politicians of the 21st century, should we not return to the Acropolis in Athens?'' Not only Prins returns to Opera Zuid. In the comic opera Orphée aux Enfers , master satirist Jacques Offenbach gives the classical myth a twist. Euridyce hates Orfeo's music, rejects her bourgeois life and travels to the underworld with her lover Pluto. The gods, bored with their rich and powerful lives, decide to follow Euridyce. Their appearance in the underworld eventually leads to an extravagant, cheerful and liberating party.

After the enormous success of Fantasio (2019), Benjamin Prins is again directing an opera by Offenbach at Opera Zuid. Orphée aux Enfers is a parody of antiquity and shows the conflict between hell and paradise. The magic of the gods fits in seamlessly with the vibrant music of Offenbach. 'The music is vulnerable like a bubble and extremely extravagant.'

Directed by Benjamin Prins, the opera is not only set in antiquity, but the piece also responds to current events. "I'm going to play ping pong with timelines." With a trip to the 18th century, a nod to politicians from the 21st century and so we return to the Athenian Acropolis in ancient times.

Eurydice haat de muziek van Orpheus, wijst haar burgerlijke leven af en reist daarom met haar minnaar Pluto naar de onderwereld. De goden, verveeld met hun rijke en machtige levens, besluiten Eurydice te volgen. Hun verschijning in de onderwereld leidt tot een extravagant en bevrijdend feest, waarbij de ‘Galop infernal’ dans (nu beter bekend als de cancan) uitbarst tot een euforisch hoogtepunt.

In de regie van Benjamin Prins, die met Orphée aux Enfers opnieuw een stuk van Offenbach bij Opera Zuid regisseert (Fantasio, 2019) blijft het stuk een parodie op de oudheid. ‘Niet alleen omdat ik van jongs af aan fan ben van de Griekse mythologie, maar vooral omdat de muziek van Offenbach magie nodig heeft. Ik wil deze opera niet omzetten naar een realistische wereld, als een hotellobby of een restaurant. De wereld die we op het podium zien moet net zo bruisend zijn als de muziek van Offenbach. Daarvoor heb ik de magie van de goden nodig. Maar ik ga wel pingpongen met tijdlijnen. We maken een uitstapje naar de 18e eeuw om Glucks ‘Orphée’, die juist heel serieus is, op de hak te nemen. En waarom zouden we, na een knipoog naar de politici uit de 21e eeuw, niet terugkeren naar de Akropolis in Athene?’’

Niet alleen Prins keert terug bij Opera Zuid. Ook dirigent Enrico Delamboye en castleden als Francis van Broekhuizen en Anna Emelianova sluiten opnieuw aan om er met levendige melodieën, verliefde stervelingen en vermomde goden een bijtende satire van te maken.
