Offenbach was an astonishingly fast and prolific composer. He easily found catchy melodies that he would introduce with the skill of a genius into the rhythms of the popular dances of the time and the frames of the city's, Parisian musical folklore. Offenbach's stage parodies or operetta satires dissect all layers of society with surgical precision, not even avoiding its top.

The best example of his active creative relationship with the environment is Orpheus in the Underground, one of the master's most famous operettas in which the object of satire is the highest level of government. In fact, Orpheus illuminated the background against which the scenes of dictatorship unfolded. It is easy to see contemporary analogies with Jupiter, the father of the gods who lurks on every pretty face, with Juno,

his wife, who is consumed by jealousy, with the double click of the gods who follow the example of their master...

Offenbach je bio zapanjujuće brz i plodan skladatelj. Lako je pronalazio dopadljive melodije koje bi vještinom genija unosio u ritmove ondašnjih popularnih plesova i okvire gradskoga, pariškoga glazbenog folklora. Offenbachove scenske parodije ili operetne satire kirurškom preciznošću seciraju sve slojeve društva, ne izbjegavajući ni njegov vrh.
Najbolji primjer njegova aktivnog stvaralačkog odnosa prema sredini je Orfej u podzemlju, jedna od najglasovitijih majstorovih opereta u kojoj je objekt satire najviši vrh vlasti. Zapravo, Orfej je osvijetlio pozadinu pred kojom su se odvijali prizori diktature. Lako je uočiti suvremene analogije s Jupiterom, ocem bogova koji vreba na svako ljepuškasto lice, s Junonom,

njegovom suprugom, koju proždire ljubomora, s dvostrukom klikom bogova koji slijede primjer svojega gospodara...
