With the commissioned work »Oryx and Crake« based on the novel by the great Canadian author Margaret Atwood, the composer Søren Nils Eichberg takes us into a fascinating dystopian world: Genetically modified beings, which are completely peaceful but also without any imagination, are supposed to replace humanity there. The opera and the novel raise the question of how far science and genetic engineering can go in optimizing people. Can the emotional structure of Homo sapiens be biotechnologically modified in order to achieve a permanently peaceful society?

The writer Hannah Dübgen has created a captivating opera libretto from Margaret Atwood's thriller; and Søren Nils Eichberg demonstrates once again after the Wiesbaden premiere of his opera »Schönerland« that contemporary music can be highly effective in theater. As with the acclaimed »Babylon« production last season, Daniela Kerck will direct her own set, again supported by the video artist Astrid Steiner. Albert Horne is in charge of the musical direction.

Mit dem Auftragswerk »Oryx and Crake« nach dem Roman der großen kanadischen Autorin Margaret Atwood entführt uns der Komponist Søren Nils Eichberg in eine faszinierend dystopische Welt: Genmanipulierte Wesen, die völlig friedfertig, aber auch ohne jede Fantasie sind, sollen dort die Menschheit ersetzen. Oper und Roman stellen die Frage, wie weit Wissenschaft und Gentechnik bei der Optimierung des Menschen gehen dürfen. Darf die emotionale Struktur des Homo sapiens biotechnologisch verändert werden, um eine dauerhaft friedliche Gesellschaft zu erreichen?

Aus Margaret Atwoods Thriller hat die Schriftstellerin Hannah Dübgen ein fesselndes Opernlibretto geschaffen; und Søren Nils Eichberg demonstriert nach der Wiesbadener Uraufführung seiner Oper »Schönerland« ein weiteres Mal, dass zeitgenössische Musik höchst theaterwirksam sein kann. Wie schon bei der umjubelten »Babylon«-Produktion in der vergangenen Spielzeit wird Daniela Kerck in ihrem eigenen Bühnenbild Regie führen, erneut unterstützt von der Videokünstlerin Astrid Steiner. Die Musikalische Leitung übernimmt Albert Horne.
