Has she? Or hasn't she? After Jago sowed doubts in Otello's heart about his wife Desdemona's fidelity, the Venetian war hero never had a quiet moment. When finally Desdemona's handkerchief, Otello's precious gift and token of love, is no longer found, he is certain: she has not lost it, no, she can only have given it to his rival Cassio! Otello seeks revenge. Sometimes very little is enough to bring a person down. And nobody seems to be able to take advantage of this better than Jago, Otello's ensign. Ensign - to his chagrin but not senior captain! Jago hits his opponent's Achilles' heel with well-aimed remarks and conjures up a drama of jealousy that initially takes place in Otello's head alone, before finally the violence breaks ground in reality. After "Aida" and his "Requiem", Verdi actually retired in the early 1870s and, to the disappointment of the audience, did not want to compose any more operas. He reckoned without his publisher Giulio Ricordi, who would not give up until the master was persuaded to write a new work for the stage. The signs were favorable: the librettist was Arrigo Boito, in whom Verdi finally had the long-awaited congenial partner at his side. And as the basis for his penultimate opera, the composer chose Shakespeare, whose works had fascinated him throughout his life. The long wait should be worth it:
