The outsider Otello strives for social advancement. His lover Desdemona, daughter of the influential Elmiro, stands by him. But has Otello really arrived in Western society? Out of envy, Otello's rival Rodrigo and his accomplice Iago stir up fear of the stranger. The apparently so hospitable "House of Europe" is being transformed into "Fortress Europe". His self-chosen motto "United in Diversity" crumbles and reveals a grimace of exclusion.

70 years before Verdi, Rossini wrote his “Otello” - loosely based on Shakespeare - a gripping and forward-looking opera, the music of which opens the door to romanticism. In this virtuoso singing festival, director Manuel Schmitt lets the audience vote on an important decision.
