This absurdly whimsical musical cannibalism by Jacques Offenbach dates from 1853, making it one of the very first operettas.

The double bass player from a notorious Parisian vaudeville theater misses his turn, is fired and suffers shipwreck for the second time, but this time not just literally. Stranded on a lonely South Sea island, the cannibals are happy about this delicious gift from heaven. The only way he can avoid the spit is to make Princess Oyayaye laugh. 

Trombolino

In addition to Jacques Offenbach, actually before him, Florimond Hervé appeared with bizarre, over-the-top operettas. Trombolino a true gem from 1868.

The Marqui Cantarini bought a castle near Naples just to be close to a beloved opera diva. When she unsuspectingly walks past his castle, he kidnaps her disguised as the notorious bandit Trombolino, just there to hear only one high C from her.
