First performance of symphonic fairy tale for children, Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev took place on 2 May 1936 at a concert at the Moscow Philharmonic. The author himself was conducting there. In three days, it was performed once again — on stage of Central Children’s Theatre. “The fairy tale surprisingly well synched with children — recalled wife of the composer Lina Llubera-Prokofieva — We went with all our family, our sons, twelve and seven years respectively, and they were completely thrilled”. This time, together with Prokofiev who was a conductor, Natalia Sats, creator and director of the Central Children’s Theatre was a narrator for this performance.

She was the one who suggested the main theme for the performance: it was supposed to be story where music instruments are introduced to children. It will teach them to distinguish different timbres and listen to symphonic orchestra. “Let our fairy tale have both wicked and kind, tough and light, grumpy and joyful ones — young people need to comprehend the stark contrasts so it would be easier for them to perceive different expressive music modes” — responded the composer.

Prokofiev “improvised” the plot about quick-witted and bold pioneer Peter, his grumpy Grandpa, Bird, Duck, Cat, wicked and gloomy Wolf and the Hunters. Every character is accompanied with their own theme and instrument. Due to repetition, “voices” of the orchestra can be memorized. Entertaining story for kids and adults about Wolf who swallowed Duck, and then was conquered by Peter, maintained the charm and lightness of improvisation in its completed form.

Soon, the symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf became one of the most popular stories for children. Based on it, numerous music movies and cartoons were released (including Walt Disney in 1946), and ballets were staged as well. It was included in the repertoire of conductors such as Nikolai Golovanov, Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Valery Gergiev, Serge Koussevitzky, Igor Markevitch, Leopold Stokowski, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, André Previn, Claudio Abbado. Vera Maretskaya, Oleg Tabakov, Konstantin Khabensky, Gregory Peck, Peter Ustinov, Jacques Brel, David Bowie, Sting, Sophia Loren, Mikhail Gorbachev, Charles Aznavour, Sharon Stone and many others who were narrators there.

In 1959, the ballet Peter and the Wolf was staged at the subsidiary of the Bolshoi Theatre (choreographed by Alexei Varlamov). The revival was conducted by young Algis Žiūraitis 5 years after. In 2016, symphonic fairy tale was performed at the Beethoven Hall, Chamber orchestra concert at the Bolshoi Theatre. Program “Prokofiev to children“ had great success in the audience and was performed continuously.

Premiere of symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf on the stage of the Chamber music theatre took place on 3 December 1999. Theatre founder, Boris Pokrovsky, was stage director, his unchanged companion Vladimir Agronsky was conductor. After the revival in 2017, beloved to the audience performance has been kept in the repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre ever since.

This fairy tale is like being composed in a real time right in front of the audience, “here and now”, during the process of playing with kids who are on stage and are in the audience at the same time. They are playing before the performance begins, and then, with all the seriousness, are dividing the roles between each other, examining and putting costumes on, learning how to walk like a duck and a cat, getting to know orchestra soloists… Bright and somewhat naive style of performance reminds of children's drawing. Peter and the Wolf of Boris Pokrovsky is a performance where the act onstage combined with clear, youthful energy music by Prokofiev seems to us very dear. Audience is like equal participants during each performance.

Первое представление симфонической сказки для детей «Петя и волк» Сергея Прокофьева состоялось 2 мая 1936 года в праздничном концерте Московской филармонии. Дирижировал сам автор. Через три дня она была исполнена вновь — на сцене Центрального детского театра. «Сказка удивительно легко дошла до детей, — вспоминала жена композитора Лина Любера-Прокофьева. — Мы пришли всей семьей, и наши сыновья, которым было двенадцать и семь лет, были в полном восторге». На этот раз вместе с дирижёром-Прокофьевым в представлении в качестве чтеца участвовала создатель и руководитель Центрального детского театра Наталия Сац.

Она же подсказала композитору главную идею произведения: это должна быть история, которая познакомит детей с музыкальными инструментами, научит их различать тембры и слушать симфонический оркестр. «Пусть в нашей сказке будут злые и добрые, тяжёлые и лёгкие, ворчливые и весёлые, — ребятам надо начинать с резких контрастов, чтобы им легче было воспринимать различные музыкальные выразительные средства», — ответил композитор.

Прокофьев «сымпровизировал» сюжет о находчивом и смелом пионере Пете, его ворчливом Дедушке, Птичке, Утке, Кошке, злом и мрачном Волке и Охотниках. Каждый персонаж сопровождался своей темой и инструментом. Благодаря их повторению «голоса» оркестра запоминались. Занятная для малышей и взрослых история о Волке, проглотившем Утку, а затем побеждённом Петей, и в завершённом виде сохранила обаяние и легкость импровизации.

Вскоре симфоническая сказка «Петя и волк» стала одним из самых популярных произведений для детей. На её основе было снято множество музыкальных фильмов и мультфильмов (в том числе Уолтом Диснеем в 1946 году), поставлены балетные спектакли. Её включали в свой репертуар дирижёры Николай Голованов, Евгений Светланов, Геннадий Рождественский, Валерий Гергиев, Сергей Кусевицкий, Игорь Маркевич, Леопольд Стоковский, Герберт фон Караян, Леонард Бернстайн, Зубин Мета, Кент Нагано, Андре Превин, Клаудио Аббадо. А в качестве чтецов в её исполнении участвовали Вера Марецкая, Олег Табаков, Константин Хабенский, Грегори Пек, Питер Устинов, Жак Брель, Дэвид Боуи, Стинг, Софи Лорен, Михаил Горбачёв, Шарль Азнавур, Шэрон Стоун и многие другие.

В 1959 году в филиале Большого театра был поставлен балет «Петя и волк» (хореография Алексея Варламова), возобновлением которого пять лет спустя дирижировал молодой Альгис Жюрайтис. В 2016 году симфоническая сказка прозвучала в Бетховенском зале в концерте Камерного оркестра Большого театра. Программа «Прокофьев — детям» имела огромный успех у публики и затем повторялась неоднократно.

Премьера симфонической сказки «Петя и волк» на сцене Камерного музыкального театра состоялась 3 декабря 1999 года. В качестве режиссёра-постановщика выступил основатель театра Борис Покровский, дирижёра-постановщика — его постоянный соратник Владимир Агронский. Пережив возобновление в 2017 году, любимый зрителями спектакль сохраняется в репертуаре Камерной сцены Большого театра до сих пор.

Эта сказка сочиняется как бы на глазах у зрителей, «здесь и сейчас», в процессе игры с детьми, находящимися на сцене и в зале. Они резвятся до начала спектакля, а затем всерьёз распределяют между собой роли, рассматривают и надевают костюмы, учатся ходить по-утиному и по-кошачьи, знакомятся с солистами оркестра… Яркий и в чем-то наивный стиль постановки напоминает детские рисунки. «Петя и волк» Бориса Покровского — спектакль, в котором происходящее на сцене и ясная, наполненная юной энергией музыка Прокофьева кажутся нам совсем близкими. Зрители как будто сами выступают равноправными участниками каждого представления.
