Peter Grimes has a quick-tempered character and is viewed with suspicion by the residents of a small village. When his apprentice boy dies on the high seas, an inquest takes place, but Grimes is acquitted. Only the village teacher Ellen Orford believes in his innocence and leads him to another assistant who is supposed to help Grimes. When he, obviously severely abused, has to go back to work at sea, an angry crowd arrives at Grimes' house. Through an accident, the boy falls off a cliff and Grimes flees to sea, where his ship sinks on the horizon.

Benjamin Britten's second opera, premiered in London immediately after the end of the Second World War, was not immediately a great success. After all, no English composer since Purcell had created anything comparable. With his Peter Grimes , however, the almost 30-year-old Britten succeeds in creating an opera that combines the local color of his homeland, the English sea, with a very variable tonal language - the perfect mixture for the setting of the subject matter The Borough based on the verse narration of Crabbe's literary model.
