With Peter Pan - The Dark Side, David Pountney and Wolfgang Mitterer take a new look at the story of the little boy who didn't want to become an adult. Written in 1911, the short story Peter and Wendy by James Matthew Barrie tells the story of Peter Pan, an eternal child who lives with the "Lost Boys" on Neverland. One night in London, Peter meets a girl, Wendy, and takes her to Neverland with his brothers John and Michael. Contrary to what the Disney version would have you believe, in the original the fact that children do not age or grow up is not due to some magic. It is these aspects, more gloomy and unpleasant, that Pountney decides to investigate in his libretto. With a mix of electronics, orchestra and vocals, the composer Wolfgang Mitterer in turn manages to retrace the darkest elements of the story without neglecting the humorous moments. Director Daisy Evans – who in 2019 had already staged the Silent Opera Vixen for the Haydn Foundation – gives us the version of a teenage Wendy at the mercy of social media and fake news. Enchanted by Peter Pan, the young woman gets lost in a world where reality and fantasy get confused. Thus begins a story that crosses the realm of shadows and human abysses.

Peter Pan - The Dark Side is a work commissioned by the Haydn Foundation with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung  and the Österreichischen Kulturforums in Mailand . The work is in co-production with the  Tiroler Landestheater,  with support from the British Council .

Con Peter Pan - The Dark Side, David Pountney e Wolfgang Mitterer gettano un nuovo sguardo sulla storia del ragazzino che non voleva diventare adulto. Scritto nel 1911, il racconto Peter and Wendy di James Matthew Barrie narra la storia di Peter Pan, un eterno bambino che vive con i «Lost Boys» sull’Isola che non c’è. Un notte, a Londra, Peter incontra una ragazza, Wendy, e la porta sull’Isola che non c’è insieme ai fratelli John e Michael. A differenza di quanto vuol far credere la versione Disney, nell’originale il fatto che i bambini non invecchino né crescano non è dovuto a una qualche magia. Sono questi aspetti, più cupi e spiacevoli, che Pountney decide di indagare nel suo libretto. Con un mix di elettronica, orchestra e voce, il compositore Wolfgang Mitterer riesce a sua volta a ripercorrere gli elementi più tetri della storia senza tralasciare i momenti umoristici. La regista Daisy Evans – che nel 2019 aveva già portato in scena per la Fondazione Haydn la Silent Opera Vixen – ci regala la versione di una Wendy adolescente in balia dei social media e delle fake news. Incantata da Peter Pan, la giovane si perde in un mondo in cui realtà e fantasia si confondono. Inizia così una storia che attraversa il regno delle ombre e degli abissi umani.

Mit Peter Pan - The Dark Side bieten David Pountney und Wolfgang Mitterer einen neuen Blick auf die Geschichte des Jungen, der nie erwachsen werden wollte. Die Erzählung Peter and Wendy von James Matthew Barrie entstand 1911. Peter Pan lebt mit den „Lost Boys“ im Nimmerland. Auf einem Ausflug nach London begegnet Peter dem Mädchen Wendy. Er nimmt sie und ihre Brüder John und Michael mit ins Nimmerland. Dass die Kinder dort nicht älter und erwachsen werden, hat, anders als die Disney-Version vermuten lässt, im Original keinen zauberischen Hintergrund. Diesen düsteren und unbehaglichen Momenten der Geschichte geht Pountney auf den Grund. Wolfgang Mitterer, Pionier der elektroakustischen Musik, gelingt es, in einer Mischung aus Elektronik, Orchester und Stimme, die düstere Geschichte auch mit ihren humoristischen Momenten einzufangen. Die Regisseurin Daisy Evans – sie hat für die Stiftung Haydn bereits 2019 die Silent Opera Vixen inszeniert – zeigt Wendy als junge Teenagerin im Haltegriff von Social Media und Fake News. Verführt von Peter Pan driftet sie ab in eine Welt, in der Realität und Fantasie verschwimmen. Es beginnt eine Geschichte im Reich der Schatten und der menschlichen Abgründe.
Peter Pan - The Dark Side ist ein Auftragswerk der Stiftung Haydn mit Unterstützung der Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung und des Österreichischen Kulturforums in Mailand. Die Oper ensteht in Koproduktion mit dem Tiroler Landestheater, unterstützt vom British Council.
