ACT ONE 

Carlo, a young carpenter, loves the unfortunate Annetta, innocent daughter of a traitor to his homeland and is jealous of the usurer Firman, who is also interested in the girl. Hondedisky, captain of the garrison, also lures Annetta, arousing Carlo's ire. peace The convoy of Tsar Pietro and Tsarina Caterina arrives, both in the guise of the high officer Menzicoff and his wife and the village tries to welcome them as best as possible Menzikoff / Pietro interrogates Madam Fritz about Carlo whose origins are unknown and arouses his grievances Left alone, Carlo fears for his bond with Annetta but Madam Fritz reassures him. SECOND ACT 

Madam Fritz visits the Magistrate to plead the cause of Carlo who, in the meantime, is released from prison causing the humiliation of the Magistrate whom others have bypassed Liberato and supplied with elegant clothes, Carlo feels uneasy and clashes with Firman again, but then he comes to know that he is Caterina's brother Madama Fritz and Annetta rejoice but now the first fears for the girl, because Carlo's new condition could alienate him from her Annetta, however, is confident Carlo presents Annetta to Caterina as betrothed and announces that he will bring her with him on agreement 

that the Tsar never meets her, because she is the daughter of the rebel Mazeppa Menzicoff / Pietro at first has a reaction of disdain but then forgives Annetta because the traitor is long dead Before leaving, Menzicoff's true identity is revealed and the sad Ser Cuccupis is dismissed to the delight of all.
