The most sought-after Bulgarian director abroad, who has been a Permanent Guest Director of the Varna State Opera since the 2021/22 season, has prepared a new reading of the Varna Opera. Conductor conductor is Maestro Pavel Balev, who since 2022 is Chief Conductor of the Limoges Opera - France, Guest Conductor of the Vienna State Opera and Zurich Opera, and since the 2021/2022 season is a Permanent Guest Conductor of the Varna State Opera. The set designer and costume designer is Julian Tabakov, the choreography is the work of Anna Pampulova.

In her analysis of the work, Vera Nemirova points out that if in 2007 she was looking for a more realistic reading of "Lady Pica", now her search in the Varna production is definitely in the field of psychological drama.

Unlike Pushkin's short story, in which the hero Herman is shown as insensitive and calculating, P.I. Tchaikovsky endowed him with a rich, dangerous hypersensitivity for himself and society.

A person divided into two, torn between two passions: the impossible love for Lisa and the passion for gambling.

Until the moment when the passion for the game overwhelms him completely, he brings the sympathy of the viewer. However, more and more his passion for the game and winning prevail in him and he forgets his original goal: to fight for his love.

Unlike him, Lisa pursues her to the end, vowing to link her life with Herman, even if he is a criminal. At the cost of destroying herself, she goes with all her being to him. Here their paths diverge, and the meridian that connects and divides them at the same time is the fate of the old Countess.

The former "Moscow Venus", a famous secular lady and passionate card player, meets her mortal angel in Herman, and he looks at her like a hologram. As Tomsky's ballad predicts that the Countess will receive a fatal blow from the one who will come passionately in love to snatch the secret of the three winning cards, they are connected by fate.

The love triangle of Eros and death entangles Herman, the Countess and Lisa and leads to the fatal end of the three.

Tchaikovsky himself is part of each of his images. Silhouettes of his complex and very suffering character are found in each of his characters. First of all, "Lady of the Spades" is therefore a strong psychological drama, and secondly and last but not least, a shocking social tragedy in which a poor and ordinary man like Herman has no place and right to love in the world of the rich.
