"Nymph reigning over a wet empire" or "ridiculous naiad"? Who is this strange creature that Rameau makes sing in a range of high-cons and who shatters the conventions of opera? Ugly and conceited, the Plataea frog is the victim of manipulation by the gods, who make it believe that it is loved by Jupiter. In this opera composed on the occasion of the marriage of Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XV, and Infanta Maria Teresa of Spain, reputed to be ungainly, Jean ‑ Philippe Rameau makes irony the main weapon of his score. This cruel and moving farce returns to the poster of the Opera in the joyful and whimsical production of Laurent Pelly.
