Porgy and Bess Gershwin

Porgy and Bess takes us to the slums of an African-American town in South Carolina. Love rubs shoulders with crime and misery. If this opera by Gershwin saw the light of day in 1935, and if the melody Summertime did not take long to flood jazz clubs, it was not until the end of the century that the work established itself as a pillar of the lyrical repertoire. It is the Chorus of the National Opera of Bordeaux led by Salvatore Caputo who, with the ingenuity of the director Emmanuelle Bastet, show us the way to Charleston... And in this adaptation of the masterpiece of Gershwin, the Chorus becomes an actor.

Porgy and Bess nous emmène dans les bas-fonds d’une ville afro-américaine de Caroline du Sud. L’amour y côtoie le crime et la misère. Si cet opéra de Gershwin voit le jour en 1935, et si la mélodie Summertime ne tarde pas à inonder les clubs de jazz, il faudra attendre la fin du siècle pour que l’ouvrage s’impose comme un pilier du répertoire lyrique. C’est le Chœur de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux emmené par Salvatore Caputo qui, avec l’ingéniosité de la metteuse en scène Emmanuelle Bastet, nous montrent le chemin de Charleston... Et dans cette adaptation du chef-d’œuvre de Gershwin, le Chœur devient acteur.
