Nature has inscribed a circle around me which I cannot leave, so I sit within and learn to love life.

No opera is so connected with Brno and its surroundings as Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, and so the new production, which ceremonially opens the 6th year of the festival, will be the work of the National Theatre Brno’s Janáček Opera. For the first time one of the best Czech directors, Jiří Heřman, is entering the world of Janáček’s operas. Each of Janáček’s operas is original and the Vixen is no different, with human and animal lives interwoven on stage. It is lyrical and melodic, sparkling with humour, kind and with a little of Janáček’s prickliness at the same time and and taking on the earthiness and humane philosophy of life of the eternal cycle of life. At the beginning of the story about the cunning vixen was the decision by the Brno editors of the Lidove noviny newspaper to provide their readers with cartoons with humorous texts. The Janáček household were regular readers of Lidový noviny and the drawn stories caught the composer’s interest, but from the original chapters of the series he chose only ten. Těsnohlídek’s tale ends with the wedding of Bystrouška and Zlatohřbítek. However Janáček resolved to make a significant change compared to the original draft and allowed the main character to die, since as a true dramatist he felt the need for a catharsis.

Každá Janáčkova opera je solitér a Příhody lišky Bystroušky, kde sena jevišti prolíná svět lidský se světem zvířecím, nemá v operním žánru obdobu. Janáček hledal téma, které by odráželo jeho pohled na svět a na věčný koloběh života, a proto jeho Bystrouška umírá rukou pytláka Harašty. Ale je tu další malá Bystrouška… život pokračuje dál. Tak to má být a říká to i Janáčkova hudba, lyrická a melodická, kde orchestr hýří barvami bílovických lesů a té havěti v nich žijící. Vše tu jiskří humorem, trochu po janáčkovsku ježatým, ale vlastně laskavým.

Autor literární předlohy Rudolf Těsnohlídek je zakladatelem krásné tradice vánočního stromu republiky a nalezení malé Lidušky v lese v čase předvánočním se stalo jednou z inspirací k liščímu příběhu i Leoši Janáčkovi. To se odrazilo i v podobě inscenace režiséra Jiřího Heřmana: „Inspirace vzešla z Těsnohlídkovy velké myšlenky postavit Dětský dům Dagmar, kam jsme naší inscenaci umístili. Děj Lišky rozehráváme očima dětí.“

Wohl keine andere Oper ist so stark mit Brünn und seiner Umgebung verbunden wie Janáčeks „Schlaues Füchslein“. Aus diesem Grund soll das Opernensemble des Nationaltheaters Brünn mit seiner Neuinszenierung den sechsten Jahrgang des Janáček-Festivals feierlich eröffnen. Damit wird einer der führenden tschechischen Regisseure, Jiří Heřman, zum ersten Mal Janáčeks Opernwelt betreten. Jede Oper ist einzigartig, und nicht anders ist es bei dem „Füchslein“, wo sich die Welt der Menschen und die Welt der Tiere auf der Bühne vermischen. Die Oper ist lyrisch und melodisch, mit funkelndem Humor, warmherzig und nach Janáčeks Art auch etwas widerborstig. Sie fesselt mit ihrer Bodenständigkeit und der liebevollen Lebensphilosophie des ewigen Lebenskreislaufs. Am Anfang der Geschichte von der schlauen Füchsin stand die Entscheidung der Brünner Redaktion der Zeitung „Lidové noviny“, ihren Lesern Zeichnungen mit humorvollen Untertiteln zu bieten. Janáčeks Haushalt gehörte zu den Abonnenten dieser Zeitung, und so wurde der Komponist auf die gezeichneten Geschichten aufmerksam. Von den ursprünglichen Kapiteln der Serie wählte er allerdings nur zehn aus. Těsnohlídeks Erzählung endet mit der Hochzeit von Bystrouška und Zlatohřbítek. Janáček beschloss jedoch eine einschneidende Änderung gegenüber der Vorlage und ließ die Hauptfigur sterben, da er als echter Dramatiker das Bedürfnis nach Katharsis verspürte.
