An opera about animals and people, about desire, disappointment and wise reconciliation with eternal nature.

 

Leoš Janáček created an opera about the eternal cycle of life, about the desire and disappointment of people and animals, whose fates intertwine in funny, comic and tragic situations on the threshold of their seventies. He found the subject in the stories of Rudolf Tésnohlídek. Another inspiration was his late love for the young Kamila Stösslova. This brilliant opera appeals to a wide range of audiences at many domestic and foreign opera houses with its wit, playfulness, emotions, depth of thought and life philosophy.

 

The editors of Lidové noviny in Brno decided to regularly bring their readers cartoon pictures with funny text. Among the painters approached was Stanislav Lolek (1873–1936), a great lover of nature and originally a hunter by profession. Editor Bohumil Markalous discovered drawings of a furious hunter with bristly beard and a cunning fox during a visit to Lolek. The editor-in-chief Arnošt Heinrich liked the pictures and commissioned the writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek (1882–1928) to write the accompanying texts. The series Liška Bystrouška (originally it was supposed to be called Bystronožka, but the typesetter at the printer got it wrong) was published in Lidové noviny from April to June 1920 four or five times a week. It soon gained popularity among a wide audience and was later published as a stand-alone book.

 

The Janáček household belonged to regular readers of Lidové noviny, and the composer was drawn to the cartoon stories at the instigation of the housekeeper. During the holidays of 1921, he began sketching the script for a new opera about Bystrouska and working on the libretto. From the original twenty-three chapters of the series, he selected ten of them, emphasized the world of animals and reduced the number of appearing human characters, merging some into one.

 

Tesnohlídko's story ends with the wedding of Swift and Zlatohřbítek. Janáček continued with the story - Quickster lives her whole life in the opera and finally dies. Revírník also recapitulates his life based on the story of the fox in the forest, and we feel a kind of identification of Janáček with the catharsis of the opera in the celebration of life, which ends in death according to the law of nature.

 

Preparations for composing the opera also included a thorough study of the life of foxes: Janáček had his friend, landowner Ludvík Jung from Hukvald, send him a report on when foxes mature, how many foxes they tend to have, how long they are pregnant and how often they give birth to young. During his stays in Hukvaldy, the composer often went into the forest with the gamekeeper Sládek, who tracked down a fox den, and together they watched young foxes frolicking.

 

The Adventures of the Vixen Bystrouska had its world premiere at the Brno Theater on November 6, 1924. The musical staging was undertaken by a great promoter of Janáček's work, the head of the opera at the time, conductor František Neumann. The direction was entrusted to the young director Otakar Zítek, and the painter Eduard Milén became the designer.

 

The Adventures of the Vixen Bystrouška belongs to Janáček's most lyrical and melodious operas. The interweaving of the world of humans and animals brings a philosophy about the life cycle of nature, which we are a part of, a view of the relationship between men and women with elements of lyricism, humor and irony.

Opera o zvířatech a lidech, o touze, zklamání i moudrém smíření s věčnou přírodou.

 

Leoš Janáček vytvořil operu o věčném koloběhu života, o touze, zklamání lidí a zvířátek, jejichž osudy se vzájemně prolínají v úsměvných, komických i tragických situacích na prahu své sedmdesátky. Námět našel v povídkách Rudolfa Těsnohlídka. Další inspirací byla jeho pozdní láska k mladé Kamile Stösslové. Tato geniální opera oslovuje vtipem, hravostí, emocemi, myšlenkovou hloubkou i životní filosofií široké spektrum publika na mnoha tuzemských i zahraničních operních domech.

 

Redakce Lidových novin v Brně se rozhodla pravidelně přinášet svým čtenářům kreslené obrázky s vtipným textem. Mezi oslovenými malíři byl i Stanislav Lolek (1873–1936), velký milovník přírody a původní profesí myslivec. Redaktor Bohumil Markalous objevil na návštěvě u Lolka kresby o zuřivém myslivci se zježenými vousy a prohnané lišce. Šéfredaktorovi Arnoštu Heinrichovi se obrázky líbily a pověřil spisovatele Rudolfa Těsnohlídka (1882–1928), aby k nim napsal doprovodné texty. Seriál Liška Bystrouška (původně se měla jmenovat Bystronožka, ale sazeč v tiskárně se spletl) vycházel v Lidových novinách od dubna do června 1920 čtyřikrát nebo pětkrát týdně. Brzy získal oblibu širokého publika a vyšel posléze i jako samostatná knížka.

 

Domácnost u Janáčků patřila k pravidelným čtenářům Lidových novin a skladatele kreslené příběhy zaujaly na popud hospodyně. O prázdninách roku 1921 si začal dělat náčrt scénáře nové opery o Bystroušce a pracovat na libretu. Z původních dvaceti tří kapitol seriálu jich vybral deset, zdůraznil svět zvířat a zmenšil množství vystupujících lidských postav a některé sloučil v jednu.

 

Těsnohlídkovo vyprávění končí svatbou Bystroušky a Zlatohřbítka. Janáček v příběhu pokračoval dál – Bystrouška v opeře prožije celý život a nakonec umírá. Také Revírník si na základě příběhu lišky v lese rekapituluje svůj život a cítíme jakési ztotožnění Janáčka s katarzí opery v oslavě života, který končí smrtí podle zákona přírody.

 

Přípravy na komponování opery zahrnovaly i důkladné studium o životě lišek: Janáček si nechal od svého přítele, statkáře Ludvíka Junga z Hukvald, poslat zprávu o tom, kdy lišky dospívají, kolik mívají liščat, jak dlouho jsou březí a jak často vrhnou mladé. Při pobytech v Hukvaldech skladatel často vyrážel do lesa s hajným Sládkem, který vystopoval liščí doupě, a společně pozorovali skotačící mladé lišky.

 

Příhody lišky Bystroušky měly světovou premiéru v brněnském divadle 6. listopadu 1924. Hudebního nastudování se ujal velký propagátor Janáčkova díla, tehdejší šéf opery, dirigent František Neumann. Režie byla svěřena mladému režisérovi Otakaru Zítkovi a výtvarníkem se stal malíř Eduard Milén.

 

Příhody lišky Bystroušky patří k Janáčkovým nejlyričtějším a nejmelodičtějším operám. Prolínání světa lidí a zvířat přináší filozofii o koloběhu života přírody, které jsme součástí, pohled na vztah muže a ženy s prvky lyriky, humoru a ironie.
