Two kings, one crown Although Elisabeth I and Mary Stuart never actually met, artists have all too often fantasized about a possible meeting between the two. The same goes for Donizetti, who sketches a blood-curdling confrontation scene in his opera. The two queens deal vocal punches, culminating in Stuarda's exclamation 'vil bastarda!' ("Dirty bastard!"). A deeply affected Elisabeth takes revenge in a ruthless way. TRILOGY Maria Stuarda (1835) is the second opera of Donizetti's Tudor trilogy, presented in three seasons. The Dutch director Jetske Mijnssen penetrates deeply into the psychology of the characters. A common thread is the life course of Queen Elisabeth, and the traumas that accumulate in it. Enrique Mazzola , world-class bel canto specialist, is the musical director of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra . Marina Rebeka , who is one of the few in the world who can play all three Donizetti queens, sings the role of Maria Stuarda. Opposite her she has the young Russian mezzo-soprano and rising star Aigul Akhmetshina in the role of Elisabetta.
