If Das Rheingold ends with the vision of the supremacy of the gods climbing a rainbow, the second part of the Ring of the Nibelungs begins with that of a solitary mortal braving a violent storm. It is about a fugitive warrior named Siegmund. When he finally finds shelter and rest in a remote cabin, it is to meet Sieglinde, a young woman as beautiful as she is unhappy. Si Das Rheingold s’achève par la vision de la suprématie des dieux gravissant un arc-en-ciel, le deuxième volet du Ring des Nibelungen commence par celle d’un mortel solitaire bravant une violente tempête. Il s’agit d’un guerrier fugitif qui se nomme Siegmund. Lorsqu’il trouve enfin un abri et du repos dans une cabane reculée, c’est pour y rencontrer Sieglinde, une jeune femme aussi belle que malheureuse. Une passion dévorante naît entre les deux, comme une évidence, en même temps que resurgit un passé enfoui qui scellera leur destin. Leur amour interdit provoque la colère de la déesse du mariage, Fricka, qui exige de son époux, Wotan, de faire respecter par la force les lois ancestrales et rigides des dieux...
