Die erste Premiere der Spielzeit 2022/23 steht vor der Türe: Für Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts Così fan tutte in einer Inszenierung von Benedict Andrews hebt sich der Vorhang das erste Mal am 26. Oktober 2022.

In his first Academy Concert at the Bavarian State Opera in 2020, Vladimir Jurowski, then designated General Music Director, combined works by Mozart and Bruckner. Now he is conducting Così fan tutte , the first Mozart opera as GMD. Vladimir Jurowski and Australian theater and film director Benedict Andrews are working together for the first time on the new production – it is also a house debut for Andrews. He has recently devoted himself more to his film projects: Seberg with Kristen Stewart, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, and before that Unastarring Rooney Mara, which screened at the 2016 Telluride Film Festival. As in-house director at the Sydney Theater Company and later at the Schaubühne Berlin, Benedict Andrews increasingly staged new drama and British drama. There and at the Young Vic in London, he has already worked with set designer Magda Willi, among others for Blackbird by David Harrower, Endstation Sehnsucht and A streetcar named desire  by Tennessee Williams, Savedby Edward Bond and several plays by Marius von Mayenburg. He has also worked with costume designer Victoria Behr, who was named costume designer of the year several times in the Theater magazine critics’ survey, for houses such as the Young Vic Theater in London, the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Nationale Opera Amsterdam and the English National Opera.

 Nothing is forever. And people make mistakes. And yet letting go is the hardest exercise when you're burning with love for the first time and want nothing more than to hold on to it forever. But can you feel as intensely forever as you did at the beginning? Così fan tutte in the new production by Benedict Andrews deals with the exuberant feelings that drive young love in the rush of hormones. Sometimes she touches on the fringes of human relationships, where one threatens to lose oneself in the search for intensity. Mozart's opera from 1790 would not be as important to this day if he did not negotiate the instability of it all. The two young couples, who believe they have already discovered the essence of true love, meet two experienced opponents in Don Alfonso and Despina. An experiment begins in which the men test their partners' loyalty through a dress-up game. What remains is disillusionment. And the possibility of a painful realization: only freedom and the longing for union are certain. Disappointment and rejection are part of the game - because no love is ideal..

In seinem ersten Akademiekonzert an der Bayerischen Staatsoper im Jahr 2020 kombinierte Vladimir Jurowski, damals designierter Generalmusikdirektor, Werke von Mozart und Bruckner. Nun dirigiert er mit Così fan tutte die erste Mozart-Oper als GMD. Für die Neuinszenierung arbeiten Vladimir Jurowski und der australische Theater- und Filmregisseur Benedict Andrews erstmals zusammen – es ist für Andrews zudem ein Hausdebüt. Er widmete sich zuletzt verstärkt seinen Filmprojekten: Seberg mit Kristen Stewart, der 2019 auf dem Filmfestival Venedig Premiere hatte, und zuvor Una mit Rooney Mara, der 2016 auf dem Telluride Film Festival gezeigt wurde. Als Hausregisseur der Sydney Theatre Company und später an der Schaubühne Berlin inszenierte Benedict Andrews vermehrt Neue Dramatik und britische Dramatik. Dort sowie am Young Vic in London arbeitete er bereits mit Bühnenbildnerin Magda Willi zusammen, u. a. für Blackbird von David Harrower, Endstation Sehnsucht und A streetcar named desire von Tennessee Williams, Gerettet von Edward Bond sowie mehrere Stücke von Marius von Mayenburg. Auch mit Kostümbildnerin Victoria Behr, die in der Kritikerumfrage der Zeitschrift Theater mehrfach als Kostümbildnerin des Jahres ausgezeichnet wurde, verbindet ihn eine längere Zusammenarbeit für Häuser wie das Young Vic Theatre in London, die Königliche Oper in Kopenhagen, die Komische Oper Berlin, die Nationale Opera Amsterdam und die English National Opera.

Nichts ist für die Ewigkeit. Und Menschen machen Fehler. Und doch ist Loslassen die schwerste Übung, wenn man zum ersten Mal vor Liebe brennt und sich nichts Anderes wünscht, als sie für immer festzuhalten. Doch kann man ewig so intensiv fühlen wie am Anfang? Così fan tutte in der Neuinszenierung von Benedict Andrews verhandelt überbordende Gefühle, von denen junge Liebe im Rausch der Hormone angetrieben wird. Manchmal streift sie dabei die Randzonen menschlicher Beziehungen, dort, wo man sich auf der Suche nach Intensität zu verlieren droht. Mozarts Oper von 1790 wäre bis heute nicht so bedeutend, wenn er nicht die Instabilität all dessen gleich mitverhandelte. So treffen die beiden jungen Paare, die meinen, die Essenz wahrer Liebe schon entdeckt zu haben, in Don Alfonso und Despina auf zwei erfahrene Gegenspieler. Ein Experiment beginnt, in dem die Männer durch ein Verkleidungsspiel die Treue ihrer Partnerinnen auf den Prüfstand stellen. Was bleibt, ist Ernüchterung. Und die Möglichkeit einer schmerzhaften Erkenntnis: Sicher sind nur die Freiheit und die Sehnsucht nach Vereinigung. Enttäuschung und Abstoßung sind Teil des Spiels – denn keine Liebe ist ideal.
