As in heaven, so on earth. This proverb is confirmed by the story of the operetta "Orpheus in Hell" told for the first time to the audience of the port city by the artists of the Klaipėda State Musical Theater (this one of the most popular operettas by Jacques Offenbach in Lithuania was first staged by the director Gintas Žilis at the Kaunas State Musical Theater in 1997). The creators of the operetta - the composer J. Offenbach and the authors of the libretto Ludovic Halévy and Hector Crémieux - are the first after their predecessors Jacopo Peri (his "Euridice" created in 1600 is the first surviving opera!), Giulio Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Christoph Willibald Gluck and Joseph Haydn of serious operas dared to attack the inviolability of the ancient myth about Orpheus and Eurydice by creating an ironic pamphlet based on its plot. Their Orpheus is not the son of the god Apollo at all, but a simple provincial music teacher, whose wife - the disappointed housewife Eurydice - is not at all impressed by his talent and endless chirping efforts to turn the most beautiful melody in the world. Therefore, he is not at all upset when his wife, who is not satisfied with his music, is kidnapped by her lover - Pluto, the ruler of the afterlife, pretending to be the god of agriculture and beekeeping Aristaeus. However, Public Opinion tells Orpheus to fulfill his family obligation - to get his wife back - otherwise it threatens to ruin his reputation and his career at the conservatory. On Olympus, they are greeted by a company of gods and goddesses who, out of boredom, have indulged in all kinds of vices, suspiciously reminiscent of the outwardly elegant aristocracy of the times of Emperor Napoleon III, enjoying refined pleasures, but quite tired and worn out from idleness...



19th century during the second half of Napoleon III's Second Empire (1852-1870), Paris was indeed a thriving modern city and the center of the entertainment world. The emperor initiated a major reconstruction of the center of Paris, during which buildings reminiscent of the Middle Ages were demolished and wide main streets were built - such as the Avenue des Opéra connecting the Louvre with the Garnier Opera House built at that time or the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. In the opera, operetta, drama, and comedy theaters built in the newly opened spaces, an intense theatrical life took place, in which not only aristocrats, wealthier townspeople, but also representatives of the so-called demimonde supported by them - courtesans, coquettes, prostitutes - took an active part. After the evening performances, the entertainment continued in cabarets, gambling houses and banquet halls (often brothels), where from the 19th century In the 1950s, the cancan dance, considered immoral at the time, became popular. Signs of clear changes and liberalization of customs could also be seen in the social sphere: after the reforms carried out by the emperor, French workers were given the right to strike, gather in peaceful meetings, and women - the right to enroll in universities.



The spirit of "new times" and "progress" is also reflected in this frantic, sarcastic tale about the vicissitudes of family and social life, which ends with the final cancan that covers all disagreements and brings joy, called by the composer "infernal gallop". This is J. Offenbach's operetta, first performed in 1858. at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens (Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens ) established by the composer as a two-act "comic opera" ( op é ra bouffon ) and later expanded to a four-act "opera-féerie" ( opéra féerie ) with many ballet scenes, staged in 1874. At the Gaîté Theater in Paris, he "legitimized" and further popularized the famous French cabaret dance, cancan, which was officially banned at the time due to its overt eroticism.



According to Tomas Ambrozaitis, the music director and conductor of the production of "Orpheus in Hell" at the Klaipėda State Music Theater, "the composer's goal in creating this operetta was to make fun of and maybe even bite the "authorities" of the time, who were not very favorable to the theater. The view here is like in the kingdom of crooked mirrors, everything in "Orpheus" is turned to the other side. The pace of the action, the change of scenes is lightning-fast, the singers not only sing, but also pour out the spoken text on speed talk, throwing ironic lines. Offenbach marches in with fireworks and blows everything in his path." Rūta Bunikytė, the director of the performance, seconded him: "visually, it remains close to a fairy-tale scene, only we lower the gods to the ground: they wear shoes, suits, hats. One may have horns, hooves, or a tail, but their needs and mannerisms are human. We can see them both in politicians, neighbors and ourselves. The best comedy is when you laugh for an hour at what is happening on the stage, and when you put on your coat, you realize that you are looking at the theater stage as if you were looking at yourself in a mirror. Eurydice can be compared to a modern woman who wants to have a lot of followers on Instagram, doesn't like household chores, doesn't want to sit around pots and chase after a man who doesn't show her any attention."



With the production of Jacques Offenbach's operetta "Orpheus in Hell", Klaipėda State Musical Theater celebrated the 200th anniversary of the origins of musical theater in the port city. Its author, J. Offenbach (1819-1880) - a cello virtuoso, composer and conductor of Jewish origin, considered the pioneer of the operetta genre, who inspired the king of operettas, Johann Strauss himself - was born in the family of a synagogue cantor in Cologne, which at that time belonged to the same Prussian kingdom as Mmeland. - Klaipėda region. True, after entering the Paris Conservatoire at the age of fourteen, Mr. Offenbach spent the rest of his life in France, where he created almost 100 operettas and his only opera, The Tales of Hoffmann. It is known that this opera in the 20th century. at the beginning, between the wars, it was shown in Klaipėda's German Musical Theater. In the first post-war years, in the Klaipėda musical comedy theater founded by Klemens Griauzdės in 1947. J. Offenbach's operetta "Pericola" was staged. And much later, in 1985 already Klaipėda Folk Opera Theater presented the premiere of the production of "Hoffmann's Tales", which crowned the long stage of formation and professional growth of the theater troupe.

Kaip danguje, taip ir žemėje. Šią patarlę patvirtina Klaipėdos valstybinio muzikinio teatro artistų pirmą kartą uostamiesčio publikai papasakota operetės „Orfėjas pragare“ istorija (ši viena populiariausių Jacques'o Offenbacho operečių Lietuvoje buvo pirmą kartą pastatyta režisieriaus Ginto Žilio Kauno valstybiniame muzikiniame teatre 1997 metais). Operetės kūrėjai – kompozitorius J. Offenbachas ir libreto autoriai Ludovicas Halévy bei Hectoras Crémieux – pirmieji po savo pirmtakų Jacopo Peri (jo 1600 m. sukurta „Euridikė“ – pirmoji išlikusi opera!), Giulio Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Christopho Willibaldo Glucko ir Josepho Haydno rimtųjų operų išdrįso pasikėsinti į antikinio mito apie Orfėją ir Euridikę neliečiamybę, jo siužetu sukūrę ironišką pamfletą. Jų Orfėjas – visai ne dievo Apolono sūnus, o paprastas provincijos muzikos mokytojas, kurio talentu ir nesibaigiančiu čirpinimu virtusiomis pastangomis pagriežti pačią gražiausią pasaulyje melodiją nė kiek nesižavi sutuoktinė – nusivylusi namų šeimininkė Euridikė. Tad jis nė kiek nenusimena, kai jo muzikavimo neapsikentusią žmoną apgaulės būdu pagrobia jos meilužis – žemės ūkio ir bitininkystės dievu Aristėju apsimetęs pomirtinio pasaulio valdovas Plutonas. Tačiau įvykdyti šeimyninę priedermę – susigrąžinti žmoną – Orfėjui liepia Viešoji nuomonė, antraip grasinanti sužlugdyti jo reputaciją ir karjerą konservatorijoje. Olimpe juos pasitinka iš nuobodulio į visokias nedorybes įnikusių dievų ir deivių kompanija, įtartinai primenanti imperatoriaus Napoleono III laikų išoriškai elegantišką, rafinuotais malonumais besimėgaujančią, bet nuo dykinėjimo gerokai pavargusią ir patvirkusią aristokratiją…



XIX a. antroje pusėje Napoleono III Antrosios imperijos laikų (1852–1870) Paryžius iš tiesų buvo klestintis modernus miestas ir pramogų pasaulio centras. Imperatorius inicijavo didžiąją Paryžiaus centro rekonstrukciją, kurios metu buvo griaunami viduramžius menantys pastatai ir nutiestos plačios magistralinės gatvės – tokios kaip Luvrą su tuo metu pastatytais Garnier operos rūmais jungiantis Operos prospektas ar Eliziejaus laukų alėja. Naujai atsivėrusiose erdvėse statomuose operos, operetės, dramos, komedijų teatruose vyko intensyvus teatrinis gyvenimas, kuriame aktyviai dalyvavo ne tik aristokratai, turtingesni miestiečiai, bet ir jų išlaikomos vadinamojo demimondo atstovės – kurtizanės, kokotės, prostitutės. Po vakarinių vaidinimų pramogos tęsėsi kabaretuose, lošimo namuose ir pokylių salėse (neretai ir viešnamiuose), kur nuo XIX a. 5 dešimtmečio išpopuliarėjo tuomet amoraliu laikytas šokis kankanas. Ryškių pokyčių bei papročių laisvėjimo ženklų buvo galima pastebėti ir socialinėje srityje: po imperatoriaus įvykdytų reformų prancūzų darbininkams buvo suteikta teisė streikuoti, burtis į taikius susirinkimus, moterims – teisė stoti į universitetus.



„Naujųjų laikų“, „progreso“ dvasia atsispindi ir šioje siautulingoje, sarkastiškoje pasakoje apie šeimyninio ir visuomeninio gyvenimo peripetijas, kurias užbaigia visus nesutarimus užglaistantis, džiugesį nešantis finalinis kankanas, kompozitoriaus pavadintas „pragarišku galopu“. Būtent ši J. Offenbacho operetė, pirmąkart suvaidinta 1858 m. kompozitoriaus įsteigtame Paryžiaus bufonų teatre (Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens) kaip dviejų veiksmų „komiška opera“ (opéra bouffon) ir vėliau išplėsta iki keturių veiksmų „operos-fejerijos“ (opéra féerie) su daugybe baletinių scenų, pastatyta 1874 m. Paryžiaus Gaîté teatre, „įteisino“ ir dar labiau išpopuliarino anuomet dėl perdėm atviro erotiškumo oficialiai draustą garsųjį Prancūzijos kabaretų šokį kankaną.



Pasak „Orfėjo pragare“ pastatymo Klaipėdos valstybiniame muzikiniame teatre muzikos vadovo ir dirigento Tomo Ambrozaičio, „kompozitoriaus tikslas kuriant šią operetę buvo scenoje pasijuokti ir galbūt net įkąsti to meto „valdžiažmogiams“, kurie nebuvo itin palankūs teatrui. Vaizdas čia – lyg kreivų veidrodžių karalystėje, viskas „Orfėjuje“ išversta į kitą pusę. Veiksmo tempas, scenų kaita žaibiški, dainininkai ne tik dainuoja, bet ir greitakalbe beria kalbamą tekstą, svaidosi ironiškomis replikomis. Offenbachas žengia su saliutais ir viską nupučia savo kelyje“. Jam antrina ir spektaklio režisierė Rūta Bunikytė: „vizualiai liekama arti pasakiško vaizdo, tik dievus nuleidžiame ant žemės: jie avi batus, dėvi kostiumus, skrybėles. Gal vienas kitas turi ragus, kanopas ar uodegą, bet jų poreikiai ir būdo bruožai yra žmogiški. Juos galime įžvelgti tiek kokiame politike, tiek kaimyne, tiek savyje. Geriausia komedija ta, kai valandą juokiesi iš to, kas vyksta scenoje, o apsivilkęs paltą susivoki žvelgęs į teatro sceną lyg į save veidrodyje. Euridikę galime palyginti su šiuolaikine moterimi, geidžiančia turėti daug sekėjų „Instagrame“, nemėgsčia buities, nenorinčia sėdėti prie puodų ir lakstyt paskui vyrą, kuris nerodo jai jokio dėmesio“.



Jacques‘o Offenbacho operetės „Orfėjas pragare“ pastatymu Klaipėdos valstybinis muzikinis teatras pasitiko muzikinio teatro ištakų uostamiestyje 200 metų jubiliejų. Jos autorius J. Offenbachas (1819–1880) – žydų kilmės violončelės virtuozas, kompozitorius ir dirigentas, laikomas operetės žanro pradininku, įkvėpusiu patį operečių karalių Johanną Straussą – gimė sinagogos kantoriaus šeimoje Kelne, kuris anuomet priklausė tai pačiai Prūsijos karalystei, kuriai priklausė ir Mėmelandas – Klaipėdos kraštas. Tiesa, keturiolikos įstojęs į Paryžiaus konservatoriją, J. Offenbachas likusią gyvenimo dalį praleido Prancūzijoje, būtent čia sukūrė beveik 100 operečių ir vienintelę savo operą „Hoffmanno pasakos“. Yra žinoma, kad ši opera XX a. pradžioje, tarpukariu buvo rodoma Klaipėdos vokiečių muzikiniame teatre. Pirmaisiais pokario metais, Klemenso Griauzdės rūpesčiu įkurtame Klaipėdos muzikinės komedijos teatre 1947 m. buvo pastatyta J. Offenbacho operetė „Perikola“. O gerokai vėliau, 1985 m. jau Klaipėdos liaudies operos teatras pristatė „Hoffmanno pasakų“ pastatymo premjerą, vainikavusią ilgą teatro trupės formavimosi ir profesinio augimo etapą.
