L’apothéose du Ring des Nibelungen de Richard Wagner 
Au pied du rocher où se sont réunis Siegfried et Brünnhilde, trois Nornes tissent le destin du monde. Passé, présent et futur s’entremêlent dans leur fil. Lorsque celui-ci vient à rompre, il ne reste plus aux divinités qu’un seul oracle à prononcer : le crépuscule des dieux est proche ! Les dénouements sont multiples dans Götterdämmerung : Siegfried tombe, victime d’intrigues et de sa propre ingénuité, le Walhalla sombre dans les flammes, Brünnhilde se sacrifie pour rendre l’anneau aux filles du Rhin. Des alliances se nouent puis se brisent à nouveau, potions et casques magiques entraînent de tragiques confusions, et le choc des générations est source de dévastation. La chute de tout ce qui est cher aux hommes comme aux dieux est inéluctable. 

Des premières esquisses de l’intrigue à l’achèvement du travail de composition, il aura fallu vingt-six ans à Richard Wagner pour achever le dernier volet de son Ring. Fascinant entrelacs de motifs puisés dans l’ensemble de la Tétralogie, la partition apporte une conclusion bouleversante à un cycle qui enchante la Monnaie depuis maintenant deux saisons. Alain Altinoglu et Pierre Audi se confrontent à l’ultime question posée par le Ring des Nibelungen : que reste-t-il de l’homme lorsqu’il ne peut compter que sur lui-même ?

Der Ring des nibelungen reaches its apotheosis
Gathered at the foot of the rock where Siegfried and Brünnhilde have come together, three Norns weave the fate of the world. Past, present and future are interwoven in their rope; when it breaks unexpectedly, the fates still have one oracle: the twilight of the gods is imminent! Götterdämmerung has more than one ending: Siegfried falls victim to intrigue and to his own innocence, Valhalla goes up in flames, Brünnhilde sacrifices herself to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens. Alliances are forged and immediately broken again, magical potions and helmets create painful confusions, and generational traumas result in general destruction. Everything familiar to humans and gods collapses. 

Richard Wagner spent twenty-six years tinkering with the final part of his Ring, from the first sketches for the scenario to the completion of the composition. The score is a fascinating blend of motifs from the entire tetralogy and offers, in this new production by Alain Altinoglu and Pierre Audi, a devastating end to the cycle that has captivated La Monnaie for two seasons.

De Ring des Nibelungen bereikt zijn apotheose
Aan de voet van de rots waar Siegfried en Brünnhilde zich hebben verenigd, weven drie Nornen het lot van de wereld. Heden, verleden en toekomst vervlechten zich in hun koord; wanneer het onverwacht scheurt, rest de schikgodinnen nog één orakel: de godendeemstering is nabij! Götterdämmerung brengt meer dan één einde: Siegfried wordt het slachtoffer van intriges en van zijn eigen onschuld, Walhalla gaat op in vlammen, Brünnhilde offert zich op om de ring terug te geven aan de Rijndochters. Allianties worden gesmeed en meteen weer verbroken, magische toverdranken en -helmen zorgen voor pijnlijke verwarringen, en generationele trauma’s voor algehele vernieling. Al wat mens en god vertrouwd is, komt ten val.   

Zesentwintig jaar lang sleutelde Richard Wagner aan het laatste deel van zijn Ring, van de eerste schetsen voor het scenario tot het voltooien van de compositie. De partituur is een fascinerende vervlechting van motieven uit de hele tetralogie en biedt, in deze nieuwe productie door muziekdirecteur Alain Altinoglu en regisseur Pierre Audi, een verpletterend einde aan de cyclus die de Munt al twee seizoenen lang in de ban houdt.
