Five artists gather at a remote farm in the countryside in hopes of remaining undisturbed by other people and worldly concerns, so they can make Great Art. However, the weather outside is increasingly disordered – waters rise, seasons occur out of order, time is out of joint. As conditions become more dangerous and erratic, each artist must face their own emotional turbulence to survive in the elements. Hope arrives in an unexpectedly youthful form, delivering a bright future. This world-premiere contemporary baroque opera reinterprets Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with additional arias and ensembles by Vivaldi and new English text by celebrated playwright Sarah Ruhl, inviting audiences to contemplate the forces of nature within us and around us, and the extent to which we need community to survive.
