Es ist die bekannte Geschichte von den beiden armen Besenbinderkindern, die sich im Wald verlaufen haben und in die Fänge der bösen Hexe Rosina Leckermaul geraten. Auch die Musik klingt im Ohr, hat doch der Komponist Engelbert Humperdinck volkstümlich eingängige Melodien in den Reichtum eines spätromantischen Orchesterapparats eingebettet.

„Hänsel und Gretel“ gehört auf die vorweihnachtlichen Opernspielpläne wie der Lebkuchen zum Knusperhäuschen. So unwiderstehlich wie das süße Gebäck ist auch die Kultinszenierung von Andreas Meyer-Hanno, die nach ihrer szenischen Frischzellenkur vor einigen Jahren auch in dieser Saison wieder festtäglichen Glanz verbreitet.
