Desire or frustration? Battle or reconciliation? A competition between three people for the hand of the queen.

A clever politician, a betrayed bride who disguises herself as a man, and three gentlemen from the best circles who want to get married cause a lot of commotion in Handel's musical tragicomedy. The Partenope libretto was based on a text by the Roman poet Silvio Stampiglia, who preferred moralizing actions and pathos to refreshingly frivolous stories and biting comedy. His textbook has nothing to do with Partenope, the last siren that Odysseus encountered on his wanderings. In Handel's opera we get to know her as the founder and queen of Naples, who is courted by three men. The first, the shy Armindo, waits a long time for the right opportunity to confess his love to the ruler. The second, Emilio, arrives with his entire army and gives the queen a choice: wedding or war. But Partenope defeats him in battle. First she arrests Emilio, but then she offers him her friendship - instead of love.

The subtlety with which the queen initially rejects the two suitors creates irresistibly comical situations. However, she doesn't get her favorite Arsace under control so easily: the queen doesn't know that he is engaged to Rosmira. Disguised as Prince Eurimene, the betrayed woman appears at court to win back her lover. She humiliates the unfaithful Arsace, but keeps the secret about her identity until the end.

Contrary to expectations, in the end the reserved Armindo emerges as the victor from this turbulent love battle, which in Handel's fascinating chain of arias not only provides ambiguous humor and a breakneck pace, but also provides a good portion of melancholy.

Eine gewiefte Politikerin, eine betrogene Braut, die sich als Mann verkleidet, und drei heiratswillige Herren aus den besten Kreisen sorgen in Händels musikalischer Tragikomödie für jede Menge Trubel. Das Libretto von Partenope griff auf einen Text des römischen Dichters Silvio Stampiglia zurück, der moralisierenden Handlungen und Pathos erfrischend frivole Geschichten und beißende Komik vorzog. Sein Textbuch hat mit Partenope, der letzten Sirene, welcher Odysseus auf seinen Irrfahrten begegnet ist, gar nichts zu tun. In Händels Oper lernen wir sie als Gründerin und Königin von Neapel kennen, die von drei Männern umworben wird. Der erste, der schüchterne Armindo, wartet lange auf die passende Gelegenheit, der Herrscherin seine Liebe zu gestehen. Der zweite, Emilio, reist mit seiner ganzen Armee an und stellt die Königin vor die Wahl: Hochzeit oder Krieg. Doch Partenope besiegt ihn in der Schlacht. Erst verhaftet sie Emilio, dann aber bietet sie ihm – anstelle von Liebe – ihre Freundschaft an.

Die Raffinesse, mit der die Königin die beiden Freier zunächst abblitzen lässt, sorgt für unwiderstehlich-komische Situationen. Ihren Favoriten Arsace kriegt sie dagegen nicht so einfach in den Griff: Die Königin weiß nicht, dass er sich mit Rosmira verlobt hat. Als Fürst Eurimene verkleidet, erscheint die Betrogene am Hof, um ihren Geliebten zurückzugewinnen. Sie demütigt den untreuen Arsace, bewahrt das Geheimnis um ihre Identität aber bis zuletzt.

Wider Erwarten geht zum Schluss nun doch der zurückhaltende Armindo als Sieger aus diesem turbulenten Liebeskampf hervor, der in Händels faszinierender Arienkette neben doppelbödigem Witz und rasendem Tempo auch für eine gute Portion Melancholie sorgt.
