The plot, which takes place in less than 24 hours, centers on three main characters: the Roman diva Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi (a painter and republican) and the corrupt police chief Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long been in love with Tosca. When he suspects Cavaradossi of helping an escaped political prisoner, he takes the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone: he wants to get Tosca to reveal the prisoner's hiding place and Cavaradossi's involvement in order to make her compliant for himself. When Cavaradossi is captured, Scarpia offers Tosca a terrible deal - she must surrender herself to Scarpia or her lover will be killed...
With this work, which premiered in 1900, Giacomo Puccini was able to continue his successful series of opera megahits after LA BOHÈME. The arias of Tosca and Cavaradossi, “Vissi d'arte” and “E lucevan le stelle” or “Recondita armonia”, are common knowledge of musical theater literature.
Due to popular demand, the Baden stage will perform the most Italian of all Puccini's operas in the original language.
