Prom 61: Chineke! performs Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony

'Be embraced, you millions!' Since the early days of the Proms, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony has held a special place each season - and with its culminating "Ode to Joy" it is one of those works that takes on a new meaning each time it is played. This year it will be from Chineke! - Europe's first black majority and ethnically diverse orchestra, along with Chineke! voices listed. BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Nicole Cabell leads a world-class team of vocal soloists and opens the prom with the haunting "Lilacs," the heartwarming song cycle that made George Walker the first African-American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
