Representada por primera vez en el 1600, Rappresentazione di anima etdi corpo, es para algunos, el primer oratorio barroco jamás compuesto. El libreto describe un diálogo alegórico entre el Alma y el Cuerpo en torno a la renuncia a los placeres materiales y la salvación espiritual. En él también intervienen personajes como la Prudencia, la Conciencia, el Tiempo, el Intelecto, el Mundo, la Vida mundana o el Ángel de la guarda, entre otros. Esta versión escenificada llega al Real de la mano de la afamada formación coral belga Vox Luminis.

He aquí una obra que podría hacer saltar por los aires todo lo que creíamos saber acerca de los orígenes de la ópera. Allí donde los manuales insisten en elevar L'Orfeo de Monteverdi como el principio de todo, el romano Emilio de’ Cavalieri nos ofrece un relato alternativo de su nacimiento. Compositor, organista, diplomático, coreógrafo y bailarín, Cavalieri sirvió al gran Fernando I de Médici como superintendente de arte, vestuario, fiestas, teatro y música, organizando para su corte una variedad de fastos que adelantaron en una década los mimbres esenciales de la ópera.

Estrenada en 1600, la Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo consta en los libros como el «primer oratorio de la historia», bien que su dramaturgia y su partitura –que incluye multitud de personajes, danzas y coros– reclaman su puesta en acción con la misma urgencia con que lo harán títulos futuros como el también oratorio händeliano Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno. El coro belga Vox Luminis demuestra a las claras que, a pesar de su lección moral, este dramma per musica no es un sermón dominical, sino un estimulante y sensible viaje interior repleto de sorpresas.

First performed in 1600, Rappresentazione di anima etdi corpo is, for some, the first Baroque oratorio ever composed. The libretto describes an allegorical dialogue between the Soul and the Body about the renunciation of material pleasures and spiritual salvation. It also involves characters such as Prudence, Conscience, Time, the Intellect, the World, Worldly Life and the Guardian Angel, among others. This staged version is brought to the Real by the famous Belgian choral group Vox Luminis.

Here is a work that could make everything we think we know about the origins of opera blow up in smoke. Whereas the manuals insist on Monteverdi’s Orfeo as the origin of the genre, the Roman Emilio de’ Cavalieri offers us a story about the birth of opera. Composer, organist, diplomat, choreographer, and dancer, Cavalieri served the great Fernando I de Médici as his overseer and master of ceremonies for art, wardrobe, celebrations, theatre and music, organizing a variety of festivities at his court which were a decade ahead of the essential features of opera.

Premiered in 1600, Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo appears in books as the « first oratorio in history», although its dramaturgy and score – which include a multitude of characters, dances and choral numbers– call for a mise-en-scene with the same urgency as titles of the future would: Handel’s oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, for example. The crystal-clear clarity of the Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis demonstrates that, despite its moral lesson, this dramma per musica is not a Sunday sermon, but rather a stimulating and sensitive internal journey full of surprises.
