Ravels Pianoconcert voor de linkerhand is een donker, maar energiek en pakkend oorlogswerk. De Franse pianist Bertrand Chamayou tovert met slechts één hand de mooiste klanken uit de vleugel. Chef-dirigent Lorenzo Viotti zet daar Rachmaninoffs introspectieve en mysterieuze Dodeneiland en Brittens indringende Sinfonia da Requiem naast.

In zijn eerste concert van het seizoen leidt chef-dirigent Lorenzo Viotti het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest en de Franse pianist Bertrand Chamayou in Ravels Pianoconcert voor de linkerhand. De componist schreef het werk voor pianist Paul Wittgenstein, die in de Eerste Wereldoorlog zijn rechterarm verloor. De angst en dreiging van die oorlog is voelbaar in Ravels pakkende muziek. Naast dit oorlogswerk klinken ook de indringende Sinfonia da Requiem van Britten, Tsjaikovksi's stormachtige fantasie ouverture naar 'The Tempest' van Shakespeare en Rachmaninoffs introspectieve en mysterieuze Dodeneiland.
