We kick off the Resounding Shores series with music by the two superstars of 17th-century England, John Blow and Henry Purcell, in a showcase of the Academy’s historical instruments, players and singers. This is a programme of grand celebratory music. John Blow’s I was glad was composed for the consecration of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1697.
Three years earlier, Purcell wrote Come, ye sons of art, his final birthday ode for Queen Mary II. This event also celebrates one of the Academy’s most famous Library treasures, Purcell’s manuscript for The Fairy Queen, which will be on display in the foyer on the day of the concert.
