Richard Goode, Pianoforte
Oratorio / Orchestral
Richard Goode is recognized for his music of incredible emotional power, depth and expressiveness and is universally recognized as one of the major interpreters of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. He records exclusively for Nonesuch and plays regularly in the most important international halls and festivals as a soloist and with major orchestras. The Daily Telegraph wrote of him: “There are brilliant young pianists and wise old glories who show their ability naturally in everything they do, without exhibitionism or elaborate virtuosity. Richard Goode is one of them”. Goode gives recitals each season at London's Wigmore Hall and in major European musical centres, such as Paris, Lyon, Verbier, Amsterdam, Budapest, Madrid, Stockholm, among many. He has been a regular guest at the Edinburgh Festival, the Kissinger Sommer Festival, the Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse. Goode has performed with all major orchestras in the USA and with many European orchestras. He has recorded more than two dozen records over the years, both of solo piano and of chamber and orchestral music. His latest recording was Beethoven's Five Concertos with Orchestra with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer, which had an outstanding critical reception calling it a “landmark” (Financial Times) and received a Grammy Award nomination. In 1993 he recorded - the first American pianist to do so - all of Beethoven's Sonatas on ten CDs: the cycle was nominated for a Grammy, chosen by the Gramophone Good CD Guide and reissued in 2017. Among the many recordings we also mention the Partitas by JS Bach, the duo with soprano Dawn Upshaw and Mozart's Piano Concertos with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. A New York native, Goode studied with Nadia Reisenberg at the Mannes College of Music and with Rudolf Serkin at the Curtis Institute. He has won many awards throughout his career, including the Young Concert Artists Award, First Prize in the Clara Haskil Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy Award. His first public performance of the complete Beethoven Sonatas in New York City during the 1987-88 season was lauded by the New York Times as "the most important and memorable event of the whole season" and was later performed with enormous acclaim at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Goode is also a highly regarded teacher and mentor to young musicians, holding the position of International Chair of Piano Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Faculty of Music at Mannes College (New York). He also gives masterclasses for prestigious institutions, such as the Manhattan School of Music, the Verbier Festival Academy and the public series of masterclasses at London's Wigmore Hall.
