"The king is having fun" is the title of the template for Verdi's "Rigoletto", the first part of his "trilogia popolare". In the opera, however, it is no longer a king, but two men enjoying themselves at the expense of others: the Duke of Mantua and his court jester Rigoletto. While the duke, contrary to moral principles, lets his women's wear overflow, Rigoletto makes fun of the men of the chosen ones. At home he mimics the loving father who almost completely denies his daughter Gilda the outside world – she doesn't even know his name. It comes as it must: Gilda and the duke fall in love, Rigoletto's double existence is disrupted. Swearing revenge, he sets in motion a tremendous drama that ultimately becomes his own undoing.

Although the premiere was preceded by a long struggle with censorship, Verdi had his finger on the pulse of the times. The thematic complexes are (still today) extremely topical: a marginal figure wants to belong, but is merely tolerated. Feelings and relationships are numbed or reified in favor of one's ego - it's about power and personal responsibility. Social systems are questioned, the game of self-perception and the perception of others is fanned out again and again. As a result, a grotesque contrast arises between real versus unreal, private versus public, man versus woman, life versus death and laughing versus crying. Beneath the squeaky surface simmers a bitter seriousness, always propelled by the archaic core: a self-fulfilling prophecy. Shortly before his death, Verdi is said to have said:
