In Verdis Oper geht es um grundlegende menschliche Bedürfnisse: Ein Vater will seine Tochter um jeden Preis beschützen, eine junge Frau will sich verlieben und herausfinden, wer sie ist. Doch die Verwirklichung ihrer berechtigten Wünsche läuft aus dem Ruder. Die handelnden Personen stolpern von einer widersprüchlichen Situation in die nächste, ihre Handlungen wenden sich gegen sie, Verdis mitreißende Musik stürzt sie in einen Taumel, sie verlieren den Boden unter den Füßen, die Orientierung – die Welt gerät aus den Fugen. Ein Albtraum.

Ein zentrales Motiv ist der Blick. Überall wird spioniert, geglotzt, beneidet, vom Exhibitionismus der Hofgesellschaft am Anfang bis zu Gildas erzwungener Rolle als Voyeuristin einer Peepshow am Schluss. Zu Beginn sehen wir den korrupten Hof mit Rigolettos Augen: obszöner Luxus, Verlogenheit, Speichelleckerei. Zum Revolutionär wird der verwachsene Außenseiter trotzdem nicht. Er spielt sich als Kritiker auf, doch im Grunde ist er der nützliche Idiot der Machtmaschinerie. Warum gelingt es ihm, dem Intelligentesten von allen, nicht, sich richtig einzuschätzen? Warum bleibt er blind? Damit wird sich diese Inszenierung beschäftigen.

Gilda ist der Gegenpol: Eine innerlich reiche Frau, die fähig ist, sich in erdrückender Enge eine eigene Welt zu erschaffen und dem abgebrühten Frauenfeind mit Liebe zu begegnen, die aber keine Antworten auf ihre Fragen erhält. Es ist Louisa Proske wichtig, die junge Frau nicht als Spielball höherer Mächte zu zeigen, sondern als Mensch mit eigenwilliger Fantasie, Sexualität, Witz und großer Widerstandskraft.

Verdi's opera deals with basic human needs: a father wants to protect his daughter at all costs, a young woman wants to fall in love and find out who she is. But the realization of their legitimate wishes gets out of hand. The protagonists stumble from one contradictory situation to the next, their actions turn against them, Verdi's rousing music throws them into a frenzy, they lose their footing, their orientation - the world gets out of joint. A nightmare.

A central motif is the view. Everywhere there is spying, gawking, envy, from the exhibitionism of court society at the beginning to Gilda's forced role as a voyeur in a peep show at the end. At the beginning we see the corrupt court through Rigoletto's eyes: obscene luxury, mendacity, toadyism. Nevertheless, the overgrown outsider does not become a revolutionary. He poses as a critic, but basically he is the useful idiot of the power machine. Why is he, the most intelligent of them all, not able to judge himself correctly? Why is he blind? This production will deal with that.

Gilda is the antithesis: an inwardly rich woman who is able to create her own world in oppressive confinement and to meet the callous misogynist with love, but who receives no answers to her questions. It is important to Louisa Proske not to show the young woman as a plaything of higher powers, but as a person with an idiosyncratic imagination, sexuality, wit and great resilience.
