"Rigoletto" is an operatic thriller of a special kind: the cynical court jester Rigoletto mocks his fellow human beings, much to the delight of his lecherous employer, the Duke of Mantua, while Count von Monterone, whose daughter recently became a victim of the Duke, swears revenge. Rigoletto tries to hide his beloved daughter Gilda from the public and the intrigues at court, but she falls in love with the duke of all people. Rigoletto turns to the contract killer Sparafucile and demands the death of his employer - but who is the body in the sack that Sparafucile finally hands over to Rigoletto?

Half tragedy, half romantic horror fairy tale, "Rigoletto" is a fusion of the real and the fantastic and thus the ideal material for the internationally sought-after director Philippe Arlaud, who is staging for the first time in the St. Margarethen quarry. The unique size of the main stage in the St. Margarethen quarry makes it possible to tell the story of Verdi's "Rigoletto" in new and previously unknown dimensions. The rugged rocky landscape of the St. Margarethen quarry is the ideal location for the production, which creates a unique, superlative opera panorama from images, music and feelings.

Anja Bihlmaier is the first female conductor to take over the musical direction at the St. Margarethen quarry. The current deputy general music director at the Kassel State Theater is considered a shooting star on the German opera scene.

With the Spanish soprano Elena Sancho Pereg as Gilda, the singer of Adina, celebrated at the Oper im Steinbruch in 2016, returns in Donizetti's "The Potion of Love". Alternating with her in this role is the soprano Tatiana Larina, who most recently enthralled audiences at the Cologne Opera in the title role of Donizetti's “Lucia di Lammermoor”. With the baritone Vladislav Sulimsky from the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and the Italian singer Davide Damiani - celebrated Scarpia in Puccini's "Tosca" at the Oper im Steinbruch 2015 - two outstanding artists could be won for the title role of Rigoletto. Three first-class tenors will be heard in the quarry for the part of the duke: Yosep Kang, Arthur Espiritu and Jesús León. The Korean tenor Yosep Kang has made guest appearances at leading houses worldwide with star roles such as the Duke in Verdi's "Rigoletto" or Riccardo in "Un ballo in maschera". Arthur Espiritu and Jesús León are also popular tenors in their field. With the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Choir Vienna under the direction of Walter Zeh, two outstanding ensembles will be able to be experienced again.
