In Torquato Tasso's epic poem La Gerusalemme liberata , source of that masterpiece which is Handel's Rinaldo , the attempted seduction of the hero by the sorceress Armida is narrated against the background of the first crusade. Musicologists recognize the great copy and paste work done by Handel, who in his score of 1711 recycled more than two thirds of previous works. This staging by Pier Luigi Pizzi, created in 1985 for Romolo Valli in Reggio Emilia, has so far touched about twenty large theaters all over the world. Apart from the practical cuts and some shifts of musical numbers, its appeal lies in the splendor of the sets and costumes: a masterful exercise of hyper-baroque style that also avoids literalism and cheap provocation.
