During a ball, Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight. But they live in a patriarchal and locked society, where any personal aspiration for happiness is shattered.

Of all the characters of Shakespeare, Juliet and Romeo were the most inspiring for musicians, from Benda to Dusapin via Bellini, Berlioz ... In the romantic era, the lovers of Verona even brought freshness to the theatrical scene. and an intensity hitherto unknown.

Gounod composed his opera while the Hugo father and son revived the reading of Shakespeare. Created between Verdi's French Macbeth and Ambroise Thomas' Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet triumphed during the Universal Exhibition of 1867. Its theatrical movement, its intense arias and duets, its orchestral atmospheres made it a popular success - the only one by Gounod. It is no longer scheduled in Paris: is pure emotion frightening?

Éric Ruf installs Gounod in the set designed for Shakespeare at the Comédie-Française - a dramatic and ecological challenge. And Laurent Campellone resuscitates this masterpiece, at the head of the orchestra of the Opéra de Rouen, with accents and a dream cast, led by Julie Fuchs and Jean-François Borras.
